Chapter 19: The Envelope

Sebastian read the photograph at three in the morning with his glasses on crooked and his hair on end.

He didn't say a word for a full minute.

"That's my page," he said.

"It's my copy's page. There's a coffee ring on the corner."

"Who has your copy?"

"Nobody. It's in my red folder."

"Then how?"

I took the phone out of his hand.

At the edge of the picture, out of focus, sat a glass bowl.

It was full of striped mints.

"Brockway's desk," I said.

"The day we paid him."

I pictured it, sitting on the bed in the dark.

I had taken my father's note out of the red folder to find paragraph nine.

I had left the folder open on the edge of his desk for ten minutes, with the contract in it, on top.

I told Sebastian.

"I'm a fool," I said. "I carry everything with me because I might need to prove it."

"You're the only person who did it right," he said. "He's the one who stole."

"Someone in that office took a photograph and sold it to your uncle."

"I'll call counsel in the morning."
