Chapter 21: Sunday Dinner
Lowell's dining room held forty people that Sunday.
Thirty relatives, as promised, and the chairman of the board.
The buyer sat at the far end with his tan and his watch.
In the corner stood a young man with a camera, introduced as "a friend of the family."
The chandelier was lit.
The roast was carved.
Nobody had touched it.
Sebastian had my hand under the tablecloth, and he held it.
"You can still go," I whispered. "You don't have to sit through this."
"I'm exactly where I need to be."
"You're sweating."
"It's the lamb."
At the head of the table, Lowell rose and tapped his glass.
It rang once, clean and silvery.
"Family," he said. "Friends. I'm grateful you could come."
He had a single sheet of paper in his hand.
"As trustee of my late brother's estate, I have a duty."
"I have spent four weeks reviewing my nephew's household, and I have reached a finding."
The room had gone so quiet I could hear the clock on the sideboard.
"Sebastian told us, at this table, that he was happy. That his marriage was real. That he knew in four seconds."
"I have a document that says otherwise."
He lifted the page.
