Chapter 10: The Review
On Monday morning the review of Nathan Ellery was held in the third-floor conference room of the courthouse.
Three people sat at the long table.
His supervisor sat on the left, a county human resources officer sat in the middle with a legal pad, and a county commissioner who had once asked him to fix her parking permit sat on the right.
Nathan sat alone on the other side in the same suit he had worn to the Grange hall.
Britt sat across the room with two friends and a tissue.
She had dressed in pale pink.
"Mr. Ellery," the officer said. "Ms. McClure has alleged threatening behavior at the Marlow Grange hall, and a history of physical harm. Ms. McClure, would you like to begin?"
"Yes." Britt dabbed at her eye. "I didn't want to do this."
She told it well.
Her voice wobbled in the right places.
She said Nathan had grabbed her on the night of February first.
She said it was around eleven, at her duplex, and she showed the photo on a tablet that she passed to the commissioner.
The commissioner looked at it and put a hand to her mouth.
"And my husband was so afraid for me that he married me," Britt said. "He was trying to keep me safe."
"Your husband," the officer said. "Mr. Sorensen. Is he here?"
"He's at work. He didn't want to be involved."
"I see."
Nathan sat very still.
He had no photographs and no witnesses.
He had only the true thing, and nobody could hold it up.
"Mr. Ellery," the officer said. "Do you have a response?"
"I was in a booth at the Bluebird Diner from ten-fifteen to twelve-thirty on the night of the first," Nathan said. "I can't prove it. I'm telling you where I was."
"With whom?"
He opened his mouth.
The conference room door opened.
Bowen walked in.
He wore the canvas work jacket with the county road crew patch on the sleeve, and his eyes were red from three days without sleep.
