Chapter 4: The Parking Lot
The gravel crunched under Bowen's boots as he stopped an arm's length from Nathan.
Behind him, the Grange hall doors swung shut.
"Say it," Nathan said. "Whatever you came out to say."
Bowen looked at him.
It was the same steady look from the cake table, and this time it did not drop.
The green eyes were red at the rims.
"Stay away from Britt," Bowen said.
Nathan almost laughed.
"I'm not near her. She came to my house and took my grandmother's lamp. Then she threw a party on my deposit."
"Stay away from her."
"Or what?"
Bowen's hand went into his jacket.
For a second Nathan thought it was something else, and his whole body went still.
It was only a phone.
Bowen held it out with the screen lit and his arm stiff.
"Look at it."
Nathan took the phone.
It was a photo of a woman's wrist.
The skin was marked in four dark ovals and one longer one, the shape of a hand that had held on too tight.
The bruise was purple at the center and yellow at the edges.
Behind the wrist was a gray couch, and a corner of a blue pillow.
Nathan knew the couch.
It was in Britt's duplex.
"That's not mine," Nathan said.
"I know whose hand it is."
"Bowen."
"It's yours." Bowen's voice cracked, and he forced it flat again. "She told me. The night of the first. She said she told you she wanted to wait on the wedding and you grabbed her. She didn't want to tell me. She sent me that at one in the morning."
Nathan looked at the picture again.
