Chapter 6: On Leave
By four o'clock on Thursday afternoon, Nathan had nowhere to be.
He turned in his lanyard and walked out of the courthouse past the same passport line.
Nobody looked at him, and everybody knew.
He drove out Route 9 because he could not stand the quiet of his house.
The Bluebird Diner sat at the edge of the county with a gravel lot and a neon coffee cup in the window.
A waitress with gray braids looked up when he came in.
"Well, hi, hon. Your usual booth?"
"I don't have a usual booth."
"You do now." She was already walking. "The back one, where you and the big fella sat a couple weeks ago. Same one. I wiped it myself."
He had not thought she would remember.
He sat down in the booth and ordered coffee.
For a long time he looked at the other side of the table, where a man in a canvas jacket had once sat and told him about the county culverts.
At five-thirty someone slid into the seat across from him without asking.
It was a woman in navy scrubs, with dark hair in a bun and a hospital badge clipped at her waist.
Her face looked a lot like Bowen's.
"You're Nathan Ellery," she said.
"I'm on leave. I don't owe anyone a statement."
"I'm not here for a statement." She picked up his coffee, drank half of it and set it down. "I'm Dell Sorensen. I'm Bowen's sister. I work at the ER at Marlow General."
He said nothing.
"You want me to leave, I'll leave," she said. "But I have three things to say first."
"Go ahead."
"One. I've known my brother for twenty-nine years and he has never once cried in front of me. Not at our dad's funeral. Saturday night he sat on my porch for an hour and cried."
