Chapter 10: The Table

The dining table had five place settings and a card table in the kitchen.

"Tobin, you'll be more comfortable in there," Darla said, with a smile she had practiced in a mirror. "Leanne, you're with us."

I looked at the card table.

It had a paper plate and a plastic fork.

"We'll both sit in the kitchen," I said.

"Oh, don't be dramatic."

"I'm not. I'm hungry, and he's my husband."

I carried my silverware into the kitchen myself, and Tobin pulled out a folding chair for me.

"Thanks," I said.

"Anytime," he said. "I love the kitchen. Best seats in the house."

Darla's smile cracked a quarter inch.

Trista sat at the dining table in a pink maternity top that did not need to be maternity yet.

She had both hands on her flat stomach, and she kept watching Tobin.

"He smells like a hardware store," she said.

"Thank you," Tobin said, with his mouth full of roast chicken.

"It wasn't a compliment."

"I took it as one."

I coughed into my napkin to hide a laugh.

Colt came out of the hallway in a blazer, hair gelled flat.

His cheek still had a faint bruise from my hand, and he pretended not to notice me looking.

"Leanne," he said, in his sincere voice. "Can we talk? Before dinner?"

"We're talking now."

"I owe you an apology."

"Go ahead."

He put his hand on his heart. "I'm sorry you got so upset on Saturday."

I waited.

"That's it?" I said.

"I'm sorry you felt hurt. It was a hard day for everyone."

"You're sorry I felt it," I said. "Not that you did it."

"Don't twist my words."

"I'm using your words. Exactly."
