Chapter 12: I Know

"Well," Darla said. "Well, well."

She turned the phone around and held it out.

Everyone leaned in.

On the screen was the man in the dark suit, with the gold shovel, and the headline with the number in it.

"Gault Ridge Development," she read aloud. "Founder and CEO. Valued at one point six billion dollars."

Colt grabbed the phone out of her hand and stared at it.

"No way," he said. "That's him?"

"I told you it sounded familiar," Darla said.

Trista's mouth fell open.

"The carpenter," Colt said. "The ladder. The truck."

"Oh, he's no carpenter," said Darla. "He's a liar."

She swung on me.

"Do you know what this is?" she said, her voice climbing. "Look at her! She's known. She must have known all along. She walked into that ballroom on Saturday and picked him out of the whole crowd. Do you know what that looks like?"

She spread her hands for the room, a performer.

"A gold digger," she said. "A little baker who researched a billionaire and threw herself at the first one on a ladder."

"Darla," Roy said hoarsely.

"And now she wants to sit at our table and accuse us of a scheme!"

I stood up.

Tobin's hand slid off my shoulder, and I felt him turn to look at me.

I had thought about this moment all week.

I had thought about what face to wear.

In the end I used the plain one.
