Chapter 14: The Car Ride
"Not tonight," my father said.
"Tonight," Colt's father said, "while the whole family is here to witness."
He stepped into the hall, and Roy let him.
He set the leather folder on the sideboard next to the smart speaker.
"Eighteen thousand, plus interest," he said. "I'll take a check for twelve and the boat for the rest."
"You know about the boat?" Darla said faintly.
"I know about everything Roy owns. That's how I lend."
Tobin stood up.
He did it slowly, and the chair did not make a sound.
"Mr. Whitaker," he said.
Colt's father went pale under his golf tan.
"Mr. Gault," he said. "I didn't know you'd be at a family dinner."
"Neither did I, at first."
"Then we can discuss this another time."
"No," I said. "Do it now. Roy's paying, but not tonight, and not in front of my mother's will."
"Young lady, that isn't how a debt works."
"It's how a dinner works," Tobin said. "You've been invited to leave."
