Chapter 4: Zero
I opened my banking app in the truck with Tobin's engine still running.
My checking balance was $212.40.
My savings balance was $0.00.
I scrolled to the transfer, and my whole body went hot and then cold.
"Sixty-one thousand four hundred dollars," I read out loud. "To Whitaker Auto Group. Last Monday."
Tobin turned off the engine.
"That's your down payment?" he said.
"That's everything I saved since I was nineteen. Eight years of birthday cakes and double shifts." My voice was shaking. "He asked me to give him access so we could pick a mortgage. I trusted him."
I wiped my face with the Gault rag.
"Where's the dealership?" Tobin said.
"Why?"
"Because you're going to want to be there when he gives it back."
Whitaker Auto Group sat on Eastern Avenue with a flagpole and a fence of orange balloons.
A banner across the glass said FALL SALE, ZERO DOWN.
It was a Saturday night, and the showroom was full.
Families wandered between white SUVs, and a salesman in a vest was polishing a red Mustang on a rotating stand.
I walked in wearing my wedding dress and my mother's veil.
Heads turned right away.
"Can I help you, miss?" the vest salesman said.
"I want Mr. Whitaker," I said. "The father."
He pointed at a glass office.
A heavy man in a gold tie stood up behind the desk, saw me, and sat back down fast.
I walked in without knocking.
"You're the bride," he said. "I heard. Terrible. Colt's a fool, but let's be adult about it."
"You have my money," I said.
"I have a deposit that your fiance made on a business matter."
