Chapter 30: Terms
The hall was so quiet I could hear the candles.
My father stayed on his knees.
He didn't look at his shoes. He looked at me and waited.
I came down two steps so I wasn't standing over him.
"No," I said.
His face didn't change. He'd expected it.
"Not today," I said. "Not because you knelt in front of a crowd. I've had enough of things done in front of crowds."
"All right."
"You want it, you earn it. Here are my terms."
He nodded.
"Take off the cuff."
He didn't hesitate.
He unclasped the silver Beta's cuff from his right wrist, the one he'd worn since before I was born, and held it out to Granger.
Granger didn't take it.
"Give it to her," he said.
So my father put it in my bandaged hand.
It was heavier than it looked.
"One year," I said. "In my infirmary. As an orderly. Night shifts, sheets, bedpans. You do what I say, when I say it, and you don't argue with the nurse."
