Chapter 32: First Snow
The first snow came early the next fall, in the dark before a Saturday.
I was up at four-thirty anyway.
Granger was already in the kitchen in his running shoes, burning toast.
"It's snowing," he said.
"I can see that."
"The kids will want to go anyway."
"The kids will want to go more."
He put a plate in front of me. The eggs were perfect. The toast was black.
Some things the Alpha of the Eclipse Pack still can't do.
At five, I opened the barn door.
The clinic light was already on.
My father stood in the doorway with a tray of paper cups, steam coming off them into the snow.
His year as my orderly had ended nine days ago.
He'd come in every morning since.
"Your year's up, Dad," I said.
"I know."
"You can stop."
"I know." He held out the tray. "Hot chocolate. The little ones won't drink coffee."
I took a cup.
I looked at him over it for a long moment.
"Supper's at six," I said. "Granger's making chili."
My father stood very still.
