Chapter 15: Nineteen
"My office didn't send anybody anything," I said.
The detective kept his pen still.
"My office was broken into three weeks ago. Somebody took two paper charts and my backup drive. One of them was Nicky's. There's a police report."
"Mr. Iuliano said the family had copies."
"Then the family stole them."
In the dining room, a chair scraped.
Dom sat in the armchair by the cold fireplace with his hands hanging between his knees.
He didn't say a word for me.
He didn't say a word against me either.
The detective closed his folder.
"I'll want to sit down with you properly, Dr. Lentini. Tomorrow."
On Sunday morning the medical examiner signed it.
Nicholas Scarpa, thirty-one.
Augie read it out loud in the front hall from his phone, and the wives began to cry all at once.
There was no table that Sunday.
There was a wake without a body.
They came at noon and filled every room of the house on the bluff. Old men in black ties. Wives with rosaries. Cousins I'd never seen at a single dinner.
They'd brought enough food for a wedding.
I took coats.
Nobody handed me one.
They laid them on the stair rail instead and walked around me.
In the kitchen, two wives were cutting a ricotta pie, and they didn't hear me come in.
"She married the father two weeks after she left the son."
"Six days."
"And now the son's in a car on the levee."
"She'd have walked away from that divorce with nothing. You know he took the condo. He sold her building."
"And now she gets the building."
"And now she gets everything."
I put the coffee pot down on the counter so hard it sloshed.
They both turned.
Neither of them looked sorry.
At three o'clock I walked through the front hall with a tray of espresso cups.
