Chapter 19: The Retort
I called Dom from the clinic with Carmela standing over me.
He picked up on the first ring.
"Augie's moved the body," I said. "To a crematory. Seven tomorrow morning."
The line was quiet for a long time.
"I signed papers on Saturday," he said finally. "A stack of them. He put them in front of me in the study and said funeral home, cemetery, priest. I didn't read one."
"Then go tell them you didn't mean it."
"If I call tonight and stop it, he knows I know." His voice was flat and careful. "He's been watching me for four days to see what I know."
"Dom. If they burn that body, there's nothing left to compare."
"I know."
"So what are you going to do?"
He didn't answer.
"Fine," I said. "I'll do it."
I hung up before he could tell me not to.
Then I called the detective.
"The body from the levee," I said. "Somebody's having it cremated at seven. Before anybody compares it to anything."
There was a pause.
"I asked his mother for a toothbrush this morning," he said.
"I know. She told me."
