Chapter 27: Closing
I looked at the lawyer for a while.
Then I picked up my explorer from the reception counter, because I'd walked out of operatory one still holding it.
"Tell Nicky his father got there first."
The lawyer's smile stayed where it was, but his eyes went blank.
He hadn't known.
Dom had spent three days that month at a table in the federal courthouse downtown, answering every question the prosecutor asked.
The trucks. The dock. The money. Fourteen years of Sundays after the cannoli.
He'd come home each night and cooked dinner, and slept in his own bed on the bluff, and never told anybody on 5th Street but me.
"Doctor," the lawyer said. "I'd think hard about..."
"I have a patient in my chair with his mouth open," I said. "The lady from the social club needs her dentures relined at ten. You can make an appointment at the desk on your way out."
The old ladies in the waiting room watched him all the way to the door.
One of them clapped, very softly, twice.
