Chapter 25: Breakwater
The yard's workboat had been tied at the end of the boathouse dock since July.
Eighteen feet of dented aluminum and a big outboard that Greta had rebuilt twice.
She had the engine running before Lukas got the bow line off.
He jumped down into the boat with the handheld searchlight and his phone already at his ear.
"Sheriff's dispatch," he said. "A drunk boater just left the Hollenbeck boathouse at Eagle Harbor, no lights, very fast. It's Tanner Hollenbeck. We're following."
Greta pushed the throttle down.
The bow came up and the cold air hit her face.
Lukas swept the light across the water ahead.
For a minute they had him.
A white wake, a dark hull, the roar of a bigger engine than hers.
Then the wake bent hard around the point and the roar dropped away.
When they came around the point, there was nothing.
Black water.
"He cut his engine," Greta said. "He's sitting out there in the dark."
"Or he's gone around the island," Lukas said.
She throttled back to an idle.
A sheriff's boat came out of Sister Bay with its blue lights going, and then another from Fish Creek.
