Chapter 14: Hanlin Guest Hall
"Not today, Minister," said Wenxuan.
He walked past the chair without turning his head, and Hong's laugh followed him in, light and unoffended.
"Then tonight. I'll bring tea."
The Hanlin Guest Hall gave him a room with a cot, a desk, a washstand and a window that looked at a wall.
It was clean, and quiet, and absolutely empty of breathing.
Wenxuan sat on the cot and listened to it.
For five nights a man had lain on a mat three feet from his bed, pretending to sleep.
After that he had not been on the mat at all.
Wenxuan had not known that a room could be this loud without him.
He got up and went to the desk instead.
The first memorial he wrote was called On the Proper Treatment of Scholars Requested as Livestock.
It ran for four pages and contained a very good line about oxen.
He tore it in half.
The second was called Against Generals Who Do Not Ask.
He tore that one in half too, because it kept turning into a love letter by the second page.
