Chapter 16: A Year and a Day
The champion's seal opened every door in the empire for one day, by an old custom nobody had used in a century.
The Ministry's gatekeeper read it twice, turned the color of cold porridge, and let Wenxuan in.
The cells were at the back, under the archives, down a stair that smelled of damp paper.
Wenxuan carried a basket on his arm.
A guard with a ring of keys looked at him, and at the basket, and at the cell at the end of the corridor.
"He's no trouble, Champion," he whispered. "He's been sitting there since noon. He hasn't touched the water. We think he's praying."
"He isn't praying."
"What is he doing?" said the guard.
"Being polite to your wall."
The guard unlocked the door.
"By the old custom, Champion, a visit under the seal is private," he said, to the keys. "Nobody on the stair. Nobody in the passage. Nobody within hearing."
"Thank you."
"I have never been so far from the stair in my life," said the guard, and fled.
The cell was small, and cold, and clean.
The general sat on the bare plank bed in his black robe.
His back was as straight as a spear and his hands were on his knees.
The red cords lay in a neat coil on the floor beside him.
He stood up so fast that his head struck the low ceiling with a crack.
"Door frame," said Wenxuan, before he could stop himself.
"Ceiling."
"It is the same thing," said Wenxuan.
"It is much lower."
Neither of them smiled.
Wenxuan set the basket on the plank and took the cloth off it.
Steam rose.
"Pork buns. Hot. Dai sat on the cook until they were done."
"You came," said the general.
"Do not read anything into it. The champion has the right to inspect the treatment of scholars in prison."
