Marry the Vampire King Save the World novel · Chapter 1 of 2
Chapter 1: Kneel and Say Yes
Sabrina kneels before Damian's throne as his court mocks her, negotiates the terms of her marriage bargain from a position of calculated strength, and accepts his public proposal while secretly cataloging the scriptorium's location for her escape plan.
The laughter had not yet died when Damian lifted the two keys from their velvet display.
The glowing stone pulsed once, a warm gold that threw Sabrina's shadow long across the obsidian floor. The dagger beside it caught the torchlight and held it, the blade drinking the fire until it seemed the metal itself would ignite.
He held them above her head like trophies.
Like she was already conquered.
Sabrina stayed on her knees because she had chosen to kneel. Her spine was a sword. Her hands rested open on her thighs, and the lion tattoo on her wrist burned faintly in the shifting light as she raised her chin to look at him.
Damian Calanthas, the vampire king of the Eastern Court, stood on the steps above her with her keys in his hands and the whole of his nobility watching from the shadows of the colonnade.
He was taller than the stories claimed. Pale as winter marble, with ink-black hair swept back from a severe widow's peak, and a face that belonged on a coin or a coffin, depending on the century. His eyes were silver now, bright as sword-steel, and they studied her with the unhurried interest of a man who had already won.
'Princess Sabrina of the Dawn Court,' he said, and his voice carried the way a bell carries across water, clear and lazy and impossible to ignore. 'You come to me on your knees with two of the three keys and a kingdom burning behind you. How convenient.'
The court laughed again, a rustle of silk and bared teeth.
Sabrina let it pass over her. She had heard worse from better men.
'You requested an audience, Your Majesty,' she said, and her voice was formal, precise, each word a stone laid in a wall. 'I have granted it. What you do with it will determine whether we are allies or whether the demon lord feasts on both our kingdoms while you posture.'
A murmur ran through the colonnade. Damian's smile flickered, just at the corner of his mouth, and his eyes shifted, silver bleeding into a deep violet that made something cold move through her stomach.
Intrigued.
She filed that away.
'Posture,' he repeated, drawing the word out as if tasting it. 'You kneel on my floor, stripped of your weapons, and you accuse me of posturing. I admire the audacity. Truly.'
'My weapons are not stripped,' Sabrina said. 'You are holding them. If you meant to kill me, you would not have bothered with the display. If you meant to ransom me, you would have sent for my father already. So you want something else.'
She let her gaze drift, just for a breath, to the base of the east tower.
A narrow door, iron-banded, set into the stone where the shadows lay thickest. The scriptorium. She had heard the vampire court kept its restricted texts there, its prophecies, its forbidden formulas.
That is where the elixir formula will be.
She returned her attention to Damian before anyone could follow her eyes.
The king descended another step. The keys still hung from his fingers, the stone's golden pulse beating against his pale hand like a second heart.
'You are correct,' he said. 'I want something else. I want your hand in marriage, Princess. Publicly. Before the next new moon. In exchange, I will help you brew the elixir and seal the demon portal before it widens past repair.'
He let the words settle over the hall.
'Or,' he added, and his voice dropped, intimate as a blade against the throat, 'I will let your kingdom burn to ash while you watch from my walls. The choice, as they say, is yours.'
The court did not laugh now. They leaned forward, hungry, waiting for her to break.
Sabrina looked up at him, at the silver-violet of his eyes and the lazy cruelty of his smile, and she let herself feel the full weight of what he was offering.
A crown for a cage.
Her kingdom's survival for her own.
And beneath the fury, beneath the cold strategic machinery already turning behind her eyes, something else stirred, a pull behind her sternum, faint but insistent, as if a thread had been tied to her ribs and someone had begun to wind it.
She had felt it before. In dreams. In visions of a dark-haired boy watching his mother age while he stayed nineteen forever.
It was stronger here, in the same room as him, than it had ever been.
Sabrina rose.
She did it slowly, with the grace of a woman who had never once in her life been forced to stand. The court rustled, surprised, as she climbed the first step toward him, then the second, until she stood close enough to see the obsidian signet ring on his finger and the faint, almost invisible seam of his fangs behind his lips.
Hidden. Retracted. He was not angry enough to show them, not yet.
Good.
'Your terms are unacceptable,' she said, and her voice was ice over steel. 'I will marry you. I will stand beside you before the next new moon and I will brew the elixir with my blood and your magic. But I am not a prize you can claim by threat. You will sign a treaty, witnessed by both courts, guaranteeing the Dawn Court's sovereignty. You will return my keys to me after the sealing. And you will never again speak to me of burning my kingdom to ash.'
She held his gaze.
'Or I will walk out of this hall, retrieve my keys from your corpse, and find another way to seal the portal before the three new moons left are spent. Do not mistake my courtesy for submission.'
The silence in the hall was absolute.
Damian stared at her for a long moment, and his eyes shifted again, violet deepening toward a near-black that made the shadows behind him seem to lean closer.
Then he laughed.
It was a warm, delighted sound, utterly genuine, and it made the court exchange glances of open confusion.
'Oh, I am going to enjoy this marriage,' he said, and he held out his hand, the keys still dangling from his other fist. 'Your terms are accepted, Princess. With one addition. The treaty is signed the night we brew the elixir, not before. I will not hand you my leverage until I have what I want.'
Sabrina looked at his outstretched hand.
Long fingers. Pale skin. The obsidian ring catching the torchlight.
She thought of the scriptorium door.
She thought of the formula waiting in its restricted shelves.
She thought of walking out of this hall with a signed treaty and nothing else, while he stood at his window watching her go.
Then she placed her hand in his.
'Agreed,' she said.
The court erupted into applause, a wave of sound that crashed against the obsidian walls. Sabrina felt Damian's fingers close around hers, cool and steady, and she felt the pull behind her sternum tighten, sharpen, as if the thread had been yanked taut.
She had felt this before.
In her visions of him. In dreams she had never asked for. A connection she had spent years convincing herself was a child's fantasy, a trick of prophecy, nothing real.
But standing here, with his hand in hers and the whole of his court cheering her surrender, she knew the truth with a cold, sinking dread.
It was real.
It had always been real.
And it was stronger here, in the same room as him, than it had ever been before.
