Chapter 6: Monday

We did not talk about the counter.

Truman made coffee on Monday morning in a clean white shirt.

I ate dry toast, and neither of us said a word for nine minutes.

"The salmon," I said finally.

"I'm banned from fish."

"By whom?"

"The smoke alarm. It voted."

I laughed into my toast, and he looked at his coffee.

Then we drove to work in separate cars, because term two says my desk is my own.

At nine the whole building stood in the atrium for the first town hall in the history of Ironbridge's new CEO.

Truman stood on a milk crate that someone had found.

"I'm Truman Shaw," he said. "I've been in Rotterdam nine years, and I'm learning the building. Be patient with me."

He did not mention the party, or me.

He lifted one hand to wave at the room, and the light caught the plain gold ring on his finger.

Four hundred heads turned.

I wore my own ring on a chain under my collar, because it was too big and I'd lost it twice already.

"Gold digger," someone whispered, behind me, in the tone of a person saying good morning.

"She said she answered an ad," whispered someone else.

"Tatum told me the whole thing. They've known each other a week."

I turned my head slowly.

Two women from Accounts Receivable looked at the ceiling.

I felt my ears go hot and my face go smooth, and I walked to my desk with my spine as straight as a pencil.
