Chapter 14: What I Put on the Table

Declan's POV

I waited until her breathing slowed.

Then I slid my arm out from under her head, and she turned toward the warm place I had left and didn't wake.

I stood over the bed longer than I needed to.

She had told me to stay out of it, and I would.

I had not promised to stay out of everything.

I dressed in the dark and left a note I wouldn't be able to explain.

The Beta was waiting by the car with the engine already running.

"You're sure," he said.

"No."

"Good," he said. "I'd worry if you were."

The hall on the hill was black except for one window.

The Judge had a lamp burning in his round chamber, and he was sitting behind the oak desk with a cup of tea going cold.

He didn't look surprised.

"Cobham. You are not permitted in this room before a Reading."

"I'm not here about the Reading. I'm here about what happens if it fails."

He set down the cup.

"Sit."

"I'll stand."

"Then stand." He folded his hands. "Say it."

I had practiced it in the car, and every version sounded like begging.

So I said it plainly.

"Rhett Garrison has a sealed result that says what she is. He has had it for eight years. If he decides to deny it at the Gathering, or burn it, or swear the sample was a different woman's, the Reading can come back empty."

"It can."

"And if it comes back empty, the law says a packless wolf cannot be the Apex's mate."

"It does."

"Then someone will take her," I said. "Garrison, or another Alpha, or any of the Seven who can claim a packless wolf by right once the bond is ruled void. She will have no say. I have read the statute."
