Chapter 5: Look Me in the Eye

"I'll go down," I said.

Declan was already on his feet. "Freja, you don't have to."

"It's my street." I pulled my hair into a knot and found shoes by the door. "He's here for me. I'm not hiding in my own apartment."

He looked at me for a moment.

"Then I'll stand behind you," he said. "Until you tell me to stand anywhere else."

His Beta was waiting in the lobby, a broad man in a gray coat who nodded to me once and said nothing.

Outside, the morning was cold and bright.

Thirty wolves in dark coats stood along the curb in two lines, with a black car at the end of them.

Rhett stood in front, holding white roses.

My neighbors had come out on their stoops with coffee.

Three of them had their phones up.

"Nor." Rhett's voice carried warm and easy across the sidewalk. He looked like he hadn't slept, and he looked wonderful. "Thank God. I've been calling all night."

"I know. I saw."

"Will you come home with me? We can talk in the car, just us."

"We can talk here."

His smile held.

"Fine. Here." He lowered the roses. "I owe you an apology, and I'd rather do it in front of everyone than have you think I'm hiding it. Last night was wrong. The announcement was a political arrangement. Marianne's father needed it before the Seven would seat me. It doesn't touch what we have."

"You told me you loved me and you stood on a stage next to another woman."

"I have to do that to get the seat. Then it's done, and I come home to you." He stepped closer. "You were never going to be on that stage, Nor. You know that. You're not registered. The Seven would have eaten us both."

"You waved me past the pad at the door."

"Because it would have embarrassed you." He said it quickly. "I look after you. Eight years, I've looked after you."
