Chapter 7: The Interpreter

The Seven's dinner was held at a table long enough to seat forty, and I sat at Declan's right hand.

Nobody looked at me for the first half hour.

They looked at him, and then they looked at the old Alpha from Lyon, who had white hair and a cane and had not said a word of English since he sat down.

"He says the soup needs salt," I told Declan quietly.

"Tell him the cook will be informed."

I told the old man in French.

He laughed and said, "He is polite. I like him."

I translated that too.

Down the table sat the Aaltonen delegation.

Alpha Aaltonen sat in the middle, a heavy man in a gray suit who kept turning toward the old Alpha with a smile.

Beside him sat Marianne, in pale blue, with her hands folded in her lap.

Beside her sat Cora, in a black dress, and next to Cora sat the friend with the diamond earrings.

Cora had looked at me once when I walked in.

Then she had looked at the salt shaker and kept looking.

The business came with the main course.

Alpha Aaltonen wanted the old Alpha's blessing on a pack alliance that would join the Aaltonens to the Lyon pack, and he had come with a speech.

I translated it line by line.

It went well for ten minutes.

Then Cora leaned toward her friend and whispered, in English, quite clearly, "Listen to her. She'll get half of it wrong. That's what you get when you let the packless wait on you."

"Pick up a fork, Freja," said the friend with diamond earrings, and giggled.

They thought the old man couldn't understand them.

They were right about that.

I turned to him and said, in French, "Monsieur, two guests at the end of the table have just said something rude about me. Would you like me to repeat it?"

He raised one white eyebrow.
