Chapter 9: The Folder

Freja's POV

I woke up alone in his bed with the sheets pulled over my shoulders and a note on the pillow.

Gone to the Seven's morning session. Rhett has petitioned the Judge to void us, and I'm answering it in person. Back by noon. The key to your room is on the nightstand. Stay as long as you like. D.

He had left the key beside the note.

Rhett wanted the bond voided before anyone could look at it.

Last night I would have called that jealousy.

This morning it only made me wonder what he was afraid the Seven would find.

I lay there for a while.

My thighs ached, and my lips were swollen, and I could still feel his hands on my hips.

I was not sorry.

That was the dangerous part.

I borrowed a shirt from his closet and went downstairs for coffee.

The kitchen was empty, and so was the library.

His study door stood open.

I only meant to look for a pen.

His desk was clear except for a manila folder squared neatly in the center.

My name was on the tab.

BOURCHIER, FREJA.

I opened it before I told myself not to.

The first page was a photograph of me coming out of my building with a grocery bag.

It had been taken from across the street.

I was wearing the green coat I had owned for four years, and my hair was in the same knot I wore when I was tired.

Under it was a typed page, dated eight months ago.

Packless wolf. Father: Beta of the Hollis pack, deceased, pack burned nineteen years ago. Mother: none on record. Never registered with the Seven.

Employed by Rhett Garrison's pack since age twenty as a contract interpreter.

Relationship with Garrison: private, ongoing, eight years. Garrison is not to be told this file exists.
