Chapter 29: The Tin
The whole diner was looking at me.
Forty wolves. Every regular. The cook with her legal pad.
My mother, by the door, with both hands over her mouth again.
"In public," I said.
"The vows are public," the Elder said. "The rest of it isn't, Miss Caskey. We're not animals."
"We're literally animals," Bowie said from the floor, picking up his order pad.
The whole diner laughed.
Even the Elder.
I put the coffeepot back on the burner very carefully.
"I'll answer," I said. "When somebody asks me who isn't the Elder."
I didn't look at either of them.
I didn't have to.
I could feel them both go hot through the bond.
On Saturday my mother and I made cornbread in the cook's kitchen.
It was a small kitchen.
Smaller than the one we'd had when I was ten.
We bumped hips at the stove the whole time and neither of us said sorry.
"Your skillet's not hot enough," I said.
"It's hot enough."
"Mama."
She turned the burner up and didn't say anything.
I watched her measure the salt.
She'd never measured it in her life.
