Chapter 31: First Shift

"Deacon," I said. "Bowie. Wake up."

Bowie said something into my shoulder that wasn't a word.

Deacon was awake at once.

He took his arm off his eyes and looked at me, and then his whole face changed.

"I can smell it," he said. "On you. Since last night."

"Why didn't you say?"

"I thought I was dreaming it."

Bowie lifted his head off the pillow, white hair standing straight up.

He sniffed.

His eyes went wide.

"Oh," he said. "Oh, she's got a wolf. Deacon, she's got a wolf."

"I know."

"Dovie's got a wolf!" Bowie yelled, at the ceiling, at the whole town.

Down in the street, somebody yelled back, "We know! Go to sleep!"

They made me wait till noon.

Bowie said I needed an audience.

By noon the whole town was on the clinic porch and down the steps, with coffee.

The cook brought a lawn chair.

My mother and Abner stood at the rail holding hands.

The boy from the ridge road had a bucket of hash browns.

We were in the lot behind the clinic.

The cook held up a bedsheet.

"You'll want this," she said. "First time, the clothes don't make it."
