Chapter 20: Scales
Brand picked me up before the medic was even sent for.
"The test," I said. "Sable, the lever."
"I've got it." Sable yanked the switch down, and the three gold nodes died.
"I'm not running your dome while you have babies in the dust. Go."
He carried me across the square at a run.
The whole town parted for us.
Somebody was already pounding on the medic's container door.
She opened it in her nightshirt, took one look and said, "On the cot. Boots off. Everybody else out."
"I'm not going out," Brand said.
"You, fine. You hold her hand and don't faint. Anyone else, out."
Gran came in anyway.
The medic looked at her and didn't argue.
The next contraction hit and I stopped hearing anything.
In my first life I had them in a Registry ward.
White walls. A night nurse who never said my name.
I'd been alone, and I'd screamed for a man whose tag was in my drawer.
This time the walls were rusted steel with a red cross painted on the outside.
The cot creaked. The stove roared.
