Chapter 29: Three Hours

I ran for the tower ladder.

Brand was already ahead of me, taking the rungs three at a time.

At the top, Sable had her hands on the governor panel and her face lit white by it.

"It's the wind," she said. "And the sleet. And them."

She pointed east.

Out past the wall, at the edge of the light, things were moving on the highway.

Dozens of them. Skinless. Low to the ground.

They came up to the gold and touched it, and it flared where they touched.

"Every one that hits it pulls power," Sable said. "The cells are draining. The nodes are cooking. We've got maybe an hour."

I looked at the board.

Six nodes. All six at full load. All six dying together.

"Then we don't run six," I said.

"What?"

"Five on, one resting. We rotate. Ten minutes each. No node cooks."

Sable stared at me. "That leaves a hole."

"A moving hole, with a wolf standing in it. One sixth of the wall, going round like a clock hand."

Brand was already pulling his boots off.

"How many wolves have we got?" he said.
