Chapter 14: The Old Healer
"Then he stays alive until the fourth," I said.
Nobody in the kitchen answered, because nobody liked it.
"A man who buried my wolf has to be breathing when it comes up," I said.
"I'll hate every day of it."
Mateo put his hand on the back of my neck, careful of the mark, and we stood there with the lamp hissing.
Nico's voice cut across the yard before anyone could say another word.
"Alpha!"
"Truck on the road, and it's not slowing down!"
We ran.
A battered Black Lake pickup came up the ranch road with one headlight and no brakes.
It went through the open gate sideways and took the post down with it.
Behind it, a quarter mile back, I saw three sets of high beams swinging through the cedars.
Mateo hauled the driver's door open.
An old man fell out into his arms.
He wore a Black Lake coat gone black with blood from the shoulder down, and he had a white beard and big knotted hands.
I knew those hands.
They had pressed my wrists and tilted my chin at every Waking I had ever failed.
"The pack healer," I said.
"Mija," he said.
His eyes found mine and filled with something terrible.
