Chapter 5: Guest-Right

The trail-run stopped at the MacClellan border checkpoint at noon.

Two black trucks were parked across the road, and both had the Kestrel crest on the door.

My stomach dropped.

The driver opened the bus doors, and two Kestrel enforcers stepped up the stairs.

They walked down the aisle, past a farmer with chickens and a boy with a guitar case, and stopped at my seat.

"Miss Alder," the taller one said. "Alpha Kestrel wants his daughter back."

The whole bus turned to look.

I held Lark closer. "She is mine."

"The claim says otherwise." He held out a page with a Kestrel seal. "You signed it."

I looked at the page.

At the bottom was a signature with my name and my looping M.

It was a very good copy.

"I signed a delivery receipt," I said. "Nothing else."

"Then you can explain it to the Alpha," the shorter one said. He reached for the sling.

I twisted away.

"Touch her and I scream this bus down," I said.

The farmer lifted his chickens off the floor. The boy with the guitar case stood up.

A woman across the aisle said, "Is that a Kestrel claim? She just had a baby."

"This is pack business," the tall one said.

"It's a bus," the woman said.

The enforcer's face went stiff. He took my elbow.

"That's enough."

A voice came from the door.

"Take your hand off her."

It was not loud.

The tall enforcer let go.

A man stood on the bottom step of the bus, in a charcoal coat with snow on his shoulders. He was broad and dark-haired, with a close beard and steady hazel eyes.
