Chapter 24: The First Text
The follow-up scan was on a gray Tuesday in March, at the clinic on the Upper East Side.
I had asked Vincent to wait in the front room.
He had argued for a full minute, and then he had gone and sat in the last chair by the window, as far from the exam door as the room allowed.
The room was twenty feet long.
The neurosurgeon was a small, calm woman with reading glasses pushed up into her hair.
She put the films on the light box and let me look for myself.
"Clean," she said. "Nothing new, nothing growing. I'd like to see you again in six months, and then every year."
My shoulders came down.
I had not known how tightly I was holding them.
"And the memory?"
"Better than I expected." She turned to me. "Most of the three years have come back, and they will keep coming. A few days won't. Usually it's the ones right around the surgery."
"Which days?"
"I can't tell you that. You'd have to find out."
I thought of the courthouse, of the first night in the brownstone, of the afternoon I had taken a swing at a girl in a red dress.
I did not remember the afternoon.
I had the story of it, in Vincent's voice, from a night in January when I made him tell it twice.
"There are holes," I said.
