Chapter 14: On His Knees
Raffaele played the recording back twice in his study, with the lamp on and the door locked.
Gemma stood at the window with her arms wrapped around her ribs.
"It's me," she said. "It's my voice. Anyone who hears it will think I said it."
"It's cut."
"You can't know that."
"I can hear where she joined it," he said. "Every 'I' is from a different day. The 'wanted' is from the dinner toast you made at the wedding, and the rest is voicemail."
She turned around.
"You've been listening to my voice that closely?"
He did not answer.
"Raffaele."
"Yes."
He crossed the room, and then he did something she had not expected.
He went down on one knee on the carpet in front of her.
She stared at the top of his black hair.
"Get up."
"No."
"What are you doing?"
"I put you out in the cold," he said, to the floor, and then he lifted his head and said it to her face. "I'm sorry, Gemma."
"You said that at the table."
"I said it for the table. This one is for you, and it's true."
Her throat closed.
She had waited a week to hear it, and now that she had, she wanted more than the words.
"That's one," she said.
"What's the second?"
"I haven't decided yet."
"Then decide," he said, and looked up at her. "I'll stay where I am."
She looked at him for a long moment, kneeling on his own carpet, with the scar through his eyebrow and a bandage under his sleeve.
Then she pushed her skirt up over her hips.
"Show me how sorry."
His breath went out of him hard.
He caught her thighs and pulled her to the edge of the desk, and lifted her onto it.
He kissed the inside of one knee and then the other, and slid her underwear down her legs.
