Chapter 23: Rent Is Due
I put my head and one shoulder through the drawer, because I had to know.
The basement of Hollis & Marsh Insurance hummed around me, cold and bright.
The clock above the supply cage said 11:09.
It was still Tuesday.
Twenty-four days in Orlenne had cost me nine minutes here.
I climbed all the way through and stood on the gray carpet in my muddy boots.
Everything was exactly where I had left it.
My coffee cup had a skin on it.
The claim folders from 1994 lay in a stack on the chair, and my phone lay on the desk beside them, lit up.
I picked it up.
Four percent battery, thirty-one notifications.
The top one said, in a landlord's brisk capitals, RENT DUE FRIDAY $1,340.
Under it, a cheerful email from my loan servicer said I was eligible for a payment plan.
Under that was one from the temp agency, with the subject line CONTRACT COMPLETE: PLEASE RETURN BADGE.
Nobody had asked where I was.
Nobody had noticed I was gone.
I stood in the middle of my own cubicle and waited to feel the tug, the thing that was supposed to pull you home.
