Chapter 12: Room 3

Lena walked across Stanley's lawn in her navy suit with the speaker held up like a candle.

Forty guests sat under the paper lanterns.

Stanley had just finished the toast, and Mom was laughing with her hand on his arm.

"I brought a wedding gift," Lena called.

Justin was out the kitchen door before I could grab him.

"Lena. Put that down."

"It's a gift for the bride."

She set the speaker on the center table between the cake and the champagne, and she pressed the screen.

A man's voice came out, low and steady.

"Foreign object. A cucumber, I'd guess."

The whole garden went quiet.

"Breathe," said Justin's voice, out of the speaker. "I'll take it out. Your mother doesn't need to know."

Every head in the yard turned to my mother.

Mom's face went rigid.

The recording ran on, and I heard myself whisper in the dark.

"Yes."

"Say it so I'm sure."

"I want you."

Somebody dropped a glass.

I stood in the open kitchen door with my hands at my sides and heard my own voice moan out of a speaker for forty guests.

Justin lunged for the table.

Lena put her hand flat over the screen.

"Touch it and I send the file to the board tonight," she said, quietly. "All of it."

"Lena." Stanley's voice shook. "Turn it off."

"I thought the family should hear."
