Chapter 11: The Cabinet

Nate got to Chicago at nine that night, with a manila folder under his jacket.

He had driven the whole way with the folder on the passenger seat, he told me, and he had not once looked at the first page.

The three of us sat in the lounge of the summer hall, the card table between us.

Everyone else had gone to bed.

Tyler sat at one end, with his arms folded and his eyes on the floor.

Nate sat at the other, holding the folder against his knee.

I sat in the middle, with my EpiPen in my lap.

"Before I give you this," Nate said, "I have to show you something else."

"I don't want an apology."

"It's not an apology."

He took out his phone and put it on the table, face up.

It was a text thread with Brynn, dated Saturday.

8:29 p.m.

Kay will probably say no to the dessert. Tell her not to ruin my night. She'll do anything you ask her.

8:31 p.m.

Please. You're the only one she listens to. 💙

I read it twice.

Then I looked at him.

"You knew," I said.

"No. Cass, no. I didn't know what was in it." His voice cracked. "She told me it was a joke between you two. That you'd been fighting and you wouldn't take anything from her, and she wanted you to take the cup so you'd make up."

"You've known my allergy since we were eight."

"I know."

"You carried my EpiPen to the pool every summer."
