Chapter 6: The Lobby

The lobby of the residence hall had a brick floor and a long front desk.

At eleven in the morning, it held a dozen summer students on couches, the desk clerk, and my mother.

She stood in the middle of the floor in a pressed blouse, holding her purse in both hands.

Brynn stood beside her in a white dress.

She had curled her hair. Her eyes were red and perfectly wet.

"Cass," my mother said.

I stopped ten feet away from them, and the girl with the lanyard came out from behind a pillar and stopped next to me.

Brynn saw me, and her whole face broke open.

"Kay!"

She ran across the bricks and threw her arms around my neck.

Every head in that lobby turned to us.

"I'm so sorry," she cried, loud and shaky. "I didn't know the dessert had anything in it, I swear. They told me it was nut-free. I've been sick about it for four days. Please don't be mad at me."

She smelled like vanilla.

I didn't hug her back.

I kept my arms at my sides and said, "Let go of me."

She let go, slowly, and looked up at the room with her lip trembling.

"She's been like this since Saturday," she said to nobody. "She doesn't mean it."

"Cass," my mother said again, her voice thin. "Look at what you're doing. She drove six hours to apologize to you."

"Mom, you hung up on me."

The lobby had gone completely quiet.
