Mom Let Me Marry the Security Guard novel · Chapter 1 of 24

Chapter 1: Marry the Guard

At her engagement party Margo announces Claire will marry the ballroom's security guard, Grayson tells her to play along, and Claire drops his ring in his glass and walks out with the guard. Grayson's text shows he knew for three weeks.

My mother told three hundred guests at my engagement party that I would marry the security guard.

She said it into the microphone, a champagne glass in her other hand, in the middle of my fiance's toast.

An hour earlier she had pinned my hem herself and told me I looked beautiful.

Grayson stood beside me with his arm around my waist.

For a second nobody understood her.

Then the whole ballroom laughed.

A man at the bar pointed at the doors and shouted, "Congratulations, Claire!"

A woman in green silk said behind her glove, "The Penhallow girl and a guard. Oh, that's perfect."

Two people were already filming.

I stood frozen, with Grayson's ring still stiff on my finger.

"Mom," I said. "What are you doing?"

My mother lowered the microphone and looked at me.

She did not look sorry at all.

"You took first prize at the Ridgeway competition," she said. "Your sister took second."

"Your sister was upset for three days. Consider this a lesson in manners."

I had not asked for first prize.

I had painted what I painted, and the judges chose it.

My sister Bridget came up beside me in her pale pink dress and dabbed at her eyes.

"Claire, please don't make a scene," she whispered. "Mom is only joking."

"She would never really make you marry a security guard."

I wanted to believe her so badly that I almost did.

Then I looked at Grayson.

He had taken his arm off my waist.

He was smiling at the crowd with his glass raised, laughing with them.

"Grayson," I said. "Say something."

"It's a joke, babe." He kept smiling at the room and spoke through his teeth. "Play along. She'll drop it by dessert."

"She just called me a punishment."

"It's one night, Claire. Don't embarrass me."

He had put a ring on my hand an hour earlier, and now he was telling me to laugh.

My mother tapped the microphone for quiet.

"You there, at the main door," she called. "What is your name?"

Every head turned.

The guard stood against the wall in a black jacket, with an earpiece in one ear and his hands folded in front of him.

He was tall, maybe thirty, with a plain face and a jaw that had not been shaved that morning.

He had not laughed with the rest of the room.

He had not even looked at me.

He had been looking at my mother the whole time, and he did not seem surprised.

"Ethan Rudd, ma'am," he said.

"Mr. Rudd, are you married?"

"No, ma'am."

"Then you are marrying my daughter," Margo said. "Say thank you."

The ballroom roared.

Someone clapped slowly, and others picked it up.

Bridget squeezed my arm. "See? It's a joke. Smile. Everyone is watching."

Everyone was watching.

That was the whole point.

My mother had picked the one night I could not leave without the city seeing it.

She had picked it so I would stay and smile and learn.

I looked at my mother, who was waiting for me to give in.

I looked at my sister, who was wiping a dry cheek.

I looked at the man I was supposed to marry, who was begging me with his eyes to be quiet.

Then I took Grayson's ring off my finger.

I dropped it into his champagne glass, and it sank to the bottom.

The laughter dropped away in patches, from the front of the room to the back.

"Claire," Grayson said. "Don't."

"Enjoy your toast," I said.

I walked across the ballroom, through three hundred people who had stopped laughing, and every step of it was filmed.

I stopped in front of the guard.

Up close he smelled of soap and cold air.

"Mr. Rudd," I said. "Are you really single?"

"Yes, Miss Penhallow."

"Is any of this funny to you?"

"No."

He said it flatly, without any wish to please me.

"I don't laugh when someone is being hurt," he said. "If you want out of this room, I will walk you out."

"And if I want a husband?"

His eyes finally came to mine.

"Then I will do that too," he said. "It's your choice. Not hers."

Behind me my mother's voice cracked across the room.

"Claire Penhallow, if you walk out that door, you don't come back."

"Your cards are gone by morning. The studio is mine. So is the name."

I turned around.

I looked at her for a long time.

"Keep the name," I said.

So I stepped out.

Ethan opened the heavy door for me, and the cold night air hit my bare shoulders.

He pulled off his black jacket and put it around me before I could say anything.

"My shift ends at midnight," he said. "The county office opens at eight."

"Do you have somewhere to be until then?"

"No," I said. My voice shook. "I don't."

My phone buzzed in my clutch.

It was Grayson.

I read it under the porch light with Ethan's jacket sliding off one shoulder.

Your mother warned me three weeks ago she'd put you in your place at the party. I didn't think she'd pick him. Come back inside and I'll make her stop.

He had known for three weeks.

He had stood next to me, put a ring on my hand, and said nothing.
