Chapter 24: Held Open

The main doors of the Grand Aldine were open when our car pulled up.

My painting hung in the lobby, eight feet high, under a small brass plate with two names on it.

Three hundred guests were already inside, and a quiet came over the room when we stepped in.

Ethan stopped at the threshold.

He had stood at that spot as a guard, in a black jacket, with his hands folded and his eyes on my mother.

Now he turned to me in a charcoal suit and put his left hand on the edge of the door.

"Mrs. Rudd," he said.

"Mr. Rudd."

He held it wide, and I walked through it on my own feet, in front of everyone who had watched me leave by it.

Somebody started clapping.

Then they all did.

My aunt cried, and Bridget cried, and the owner of the Grand Aldine blew his nose in a napkin.

We danced once, in the middle of the marble floor.

"They're all staring," I said into his collar.

"They're jealous."

"Of what?"

"That you chose me."

"I was assigned you," I said.

"Best day of my life."

The owner had given us the suite above the ballroom, with a wide bed and a window over the city.

We shut the door at ten.

I stood with my back to it, in the ivory dress, and Ethan stood in the middle of the room and loosened his tie.

"Come here," he said.

"You come here."

"I'm your husband."

"You were my husband in a county office," I said. "Tonight you earn it."

He crossed the room in three strides and kissed me against the door.

His mouth was hot and hungry, and his hands found the zipper and dragged it down my back.

The dress slid to the floor.

He lifted me out of it, set me on the edge of the bed, and knelt.

"Ethan."

"Let me."

He pushed my thighs apart and put his mouth on my pussy through my underwear, hot breath, and I gripped the sheets.
