On Christmas Eve two grandmothers went to war over a fish.
My avó was eighty-one and had come from the island of Pico at nineteen.
She boiled her salt cod with potatoes, cabbage and eggs and poured olive oil over it, as her family always had.
Riccardo's nonna, who was eighty-four, fried hers.
Both of them had been soaking their cod in the Blackstone Boulevard sink since Sunday.
"Three days," said my avó, in Portuguese.
"Four," said his nonna, in Italian.
They did not speak each other's language, and they understood each other perfectly.
"That is why it's tough," said my avó.
"That is why it's tender," said his nonna.
My mother and Fortunato stood in the kitchen doorway with their drinks and watched, and neither one dared to step between them.
"Seven fishes for us," Fortunato said to my mother, low. "Cod for you. We'll have all of it. We'll be sick by midnight."
"Good," my mother said. "That means it was a proper Christmas."
