Chapter 14: The Broken Engagement
The Prince unrolled a paper, because he had never in his life said a hard thing without a script.
"By the authority of the Crown and the will of the heart," he read.
"Lady Rosamund Hallowell has shown cruelty to the innocent, contempt for the court and greed beyond her rank."
"The betrothal is dissolved, and her family is to keep from the palace."
He lowered the paper and looked at me with a small, bright, hopeful smile.
He wanted me to scream.
Everything he had planned depended on it, the throne, the white ribbon, the scene in the book.
I took a folder from my sleeve.
"Thank you, Your Highness," I said.
"I accept the dissolution, and I'd like to settle accounts today so you don't have to carry them."
The smile slipped.
I walked up the aisle to the foot of the dais, and two hundred people parted for me.
Betsy followed three steps behind, carrying a small velvet cushion.
On the cushion lay the betrothal ring.
