Chapter 24: Hers
The Hallowell house had a new roof by autumn, and the tithe barn had one too.
I had paid for both myself, in cash, with receipts.
Betsy stood at the barn door in a dress of dove-grey wool, with a ledger under her arm and a brass key at her belt.
She was the steward of three estates now, on a salary of three hundred crowns a year.
She had insisted on negotiating it down to a round figure, because she said she wanted to be able to remember it.
"Your father is in the orchard, my lady," she said.
"Doing what?"
"Telling the apple pickers how to hold ladders."
"Have they listened?"
"They have asked for a raise."
I laughed.
The sun was low and gold on the long field, and a hundred and fifty people had come to a wedding in a barn.
There were lords in their good coats, and farm families in their Sunday ones.
The treasurer had come, with her ledger, in case anyone required a witness.
