Chapter 32: The Dock
The Governor swore me in at two on Saturday afternoon, in the basement hearing room where six residents had once voted six to nothing.
The coat-check rack stood by the door with its paper tickets, and it was full by one.
Honore Street filled the left side of the room, the Table the right.
The Rangers' captains sat at the back in flannel with the sixth one among them.
My mother sat in front with her thermos, and she cried through the whole oath in the quiet way she did everything.
Pashek stood against the rear wall in his bow tie and overcoat.
When it was done he came forward and laid a ring of keys in my hand.
"The autopsy suite, colleague," he said. "It is yours on the first of January."
I closed my fingers on the keys, and I did not say anything gracious, because I did not have it.
He nodded once.
The Office of the Examiner of Cracks had four rooms in the medical district and a statute that would pass in January.
On the wall of the cold room hung a lit map that showed every phone in Illinois going quiet.
It was the Silence Board, unlocked and handed over.
