Chapter 4: The Tea

Philippa came to the Stonecrest gate two days later, alone, with a suitcase and a steel thermos.

The guards called me down to the hut.

She stood on the road side of the border stone with her blonde hair brushed smooth and her eyes red.

"Flora," she said. "Thank God. Look at you."

"Hello, Philippa."

"I brought your things. Your good coat, your boots, your pillow. You left in a nightgown. I haven't slept since."

She held the suitcase out over the stone.

Ronan's guard took it before I could.

"And this," she said, lifting the thermos, "is the tea Holly used to make you. Ginger and chamomile. It's good for the baby. I know you're angry, but I don't want you to go without."

I looked at her.

It was the same voice she had used when she lifted the roast off my plate.

"Cedric hasn't eaten since you left," she said. "He's blaming himself. If you'd just come home, I promise I'll make sure you get everything you need."

"Everything I need."

"Meat. Three meals. Whatever you want."

"You said rabbit and greens. In front of seventy wolves."

Her lip trembled.

"That was the allies. I had to say something. You don't know what they were saying about you."

"I know what they were saying about me. You told me."

"Please take the tea, Flora."

I took it.

She smiled and wiped her cheek with the back of her wrist.

"I'll come back on Friday," she said. "I'll bring a pie."

She walked to her car with her shoulders bent, and I watched her go.

The guard carried the suitcase up to my room.
