Chapter 6: Rabbit Day

Cedric was at the stone at noon, and Ronan walked him into the Stonecrest hall as an invited guest.

Sixty wolves sat down at the long tables to eat.

Ronan put me at his right hand, and he put Cedric opposite me, in front of everyone.

A server set a plate in front of the Alpha of Redhollow.

It held two pale pieces of rabbit and a pile of boiled greens.

Nothing else.

"Eat," I said.

The hall had gone quiet.

Cedric picked up his fork.

He cut the rabbit and put it in his mouth.

He chewed for a long time.

"It's dry," he said.

"Mine was drier."

Somebody at the next table choked on their water.

My own plate came a moment later, and it was a ham steak with three roast potatoes, a mound of buttered corn and a wedge of apple pie in a bowl of cream.

Ronan had told the kitchen to bring me whatever I asked for.

I asked for the steak first.

I cut into it slowly and ate the first bite looking at Cedric.

"Good?" he said.

"Very."

"Do you want the salt?"

He reached for it, and his hand shook so badly that the shaker rattled against the glass.

I watched him try twice.

Then I reached across the table myself and took it from his fingers, and our hands touched.

The shaking stopped.

He went still.

I looked at my plate and told myself I had seen nothing.

"Thank you," he said.

"You're welcome."

I salted my potatoes.

For the next ten minutes we ate in silence while sixty wolves pretended not to stare.

He finished the rabbit.

He finished the greens.

Then he sat there with an empty plate and stared at my corn.
