Chapter 9: The Vice Chairman's Desk
The Vice Chairman's office was on the thirty-sixth floor and smelled of old tea.
Jung-gook had Eun-ho sit in the leather chair across from his desk, which was bare except for a lamp and a blotter.
A small porcelain cup sat beside them.
Jung-gook poured himself tea.
He didn't pour any for Eun-ho.
"You are very good at your job, Secretary Moon," he said. "My nephew has gone through eleven secretaries. You he kept for three years."
"Thank you, sir."
"I'd like to know why."
"I do the work."
"Many people do the work."
Jung-gook turned the gold pen once over his knuckles.
"Let me tell you a story. Four years ago my brother, the chairman, died, and his son took the chair."
"That son signed three policies in his first month. Two were budgets."
"The third made the executive floor beta-only and exempted it from the Registry's screenings."
He sipped.
"I thought that was strange for a man who tells the press omegas are a liability."
"Mr. Ha has his reasons."
"I'm sure."
Jung-gook opened a drawer, laid a photograph on the blotter, and turned it toward Eun-ho with one finger.
It showed a white pill.
It was the same pill as in the message, in a different gloved hand.
