Chapter 12: Storm

The cramp came again before the first one let go.

I grabbed the piling and held on.

"Morven?" Bram's hand closed on my elbow. "What is it?"

"I don't know. It's too early."

"How early?"

"Seven weeks."

His face changed.

The wind had picked up, and the sky over the mountains had turned the color of a bruise.

Across the water, Cormac took a step onto the end of the dock.

"What's wrong with her?"

"Stay where you are," Bram said.

"If it's the baby..."

"You don't get to ask."

Cormac stopped.

His eyes were on my hand, spread across my belly, and I saw him swallow.

"Take Felicity home," he said, without looking away from me.

The Beta blinked.

"Alpha?"

"Take her home and keep her in the house. Don't let her out of your sight."

"Cormac!" Felicity's voice cracked.

"You can't think that I... I was pushed!

She did it on purpose, she wanted me in the water!"

"Home."

She stared at him.

Then she looked at me, and for a second her face showed everything it had never shown him.

It was pure, flat hate.

The Beta took her by the elbow.

She went.

Cormac stayed.

He stood at the shore end of the dock with rain starting to dot his shirt.

He looked at me.

"Morven. Let my doctor see you."
