Chapter 15: The Stone

Emmett said it all in one breath, out loud.

"The elder called the Table to the Stone at dawn," he said. "Ansel walked in alone and asked for single combat over the torn page."

"The elder wouldn't take the challenge," said Nolan. "He said the Alpha had broken the Law by keeping a wolf who asked to leave."

"The Table agreed," said Emmett. "They put a silver chain on him."

"He let them," said Nolan. "He said if he fought, you would pay for it."

I was already out of the van.

"Why didn't you stop it?" I said.

"We were told to stay at the road," Emmett said. "We were told you'd come, and that the elder wants you to come."

"So you're telling me."

"Yes." His voice cracked. "We're telling you everything, from now on."

I ran.

The clearing was a bowl of wet grass, with the boundary stone standing grey in the middle of it.

The whole pack stood in a ring around the stone, eighty wolves in their coats, silent.

Ansel knelt in front of it.

A silver chain was wound round his wrists and neck, and where it touched him the skin smoked and blistered.

His head was up.

He was looking straight at the elder.

The elder stood over him, a tall man with a close white beard and a staff of pale ash.

He read from a paper in a flat, patient voice.

Cordelia stood at his shoulder in a dark blue dress, with her hand pressed to her mouth and tears on her cheeks.

"...and so the Table finds that Alpha Garrick, by refusing to release a wolf who asked, has put the whole pack at risk," the elder read. "His word is suspended."

I shoved through the ring.
