Chapter 23: Her Own Words

I told him my plan at breakfast, with the whole hall listening.

"At sundown I'm going to the Stone," I said. "I'd like you to come. I'm going to say something there."

Ansel put down his coffee very carefully.

"I'll be there," he said.

"I know. I'm telling you anyway."

Emmett cheered into his oatmeal, and Nolan kicked him under the table.

The Stone stood where it had always stood, grey and mossy in its clearing at the bottom of the Ridge road.

I had last seen it from my hands and knees.

The sea wind moved in the cedars, and the light came in low and gold between the trunks.

Ansel stood a few feet behind me with his hands at his sides.

He did not say a word.

I walked up to the Stone and laid my palm flat against it, and it was warm.

"I'm not here because I guessed," I said.

My voice shook, and I kept going.

"For eight years I thought I was clever, and I wasn't. I was pulled. This time nothing pulled me. I decided."

I turned around.

"I choose the bond, Ansel. I choose it with my eyes open and my mouth working. I choose you."

"Not because the Law says I must. Not because I can't help it. Because I want you, and I'd want you if there were no bond at all."

He stood very still.

"I want you in my kitchen and in my clinic and in my bed," I said. "I want you to tell me when you're scared. I want you to be bad at breakfast with me for sixty years."

His face broke.

"Now my part," he said, hoarsely.

He came to me and took my face in both hands.

"I choose you. I've chosen you every day for eight years, and I'll choose you every day I'm alive."

"I want you as my mate and my equal. I want you to tell me when I'm wrong."
