Chapter 16: The Hunter's Moon

"Zero," I said. "That's not frozen. That's empty."

"I called the bank's night line," Fern said. "They say a frozen account shows zero to members. That's all it means."

"Do you believe that?"

"I believe the jar has nineteen thousand dollars in it, and that's it."

Gunnar was looking at the screen.

He looked at it for too long.

"There was two million in that fund when I was Beta," he said quietly.

"So we can't buy it," Glory said from the stairs, in her socks.

"No."

"So Silver Ridge gets the house."

"No," I said.

I went and got the flyer off the refrigerator.

"Colt swore something on his father's name," I said. "If I don't go back before the Hunter's Moon, the Pup House stays open. Not 'the pups stay.' The house."

"He can't sell it," she said slowly.

"He can try. In front of both packs. At moonrise."

"And you're going to be there at moonrise."

"Not one minute before."

Gunnar looked up at me.

The gold came into his eyes, just for a second.

"I'll drive," he said.

The night of the Hunter's Moon, the lodge was lit up.

Fern took the kids in through the back doors and stood with them against the wall, all five, in their cleanest clothes.

Gunnar went in through the back doors, too, and stood where he'd stood at the feast.

I didn't go in.

The great hall is on the bottom floor. The upper floor opens straight onto the hillside, onto a deck with a door nobody uses.

I climbed the hill path in the dark with my phone in my hand and the clock running.

At the deck door I stopped.

The eldest of the council stood at a table at the bottom of the stairs, with a gavel and the Silver Ridge bid in front of her.

Colt was on the landing with Roxanne, in black, with a drink.
