I looked over my shoulder.
Glory was asleep against the window, her mouth open. The little one was asleep across her lap.
Neither of them had heard.
I turned back.
"Tell me all of it."
He sat up and looked out the windshield at the snow.
"The rogues had been testing the border for a week," he said. "My brother doubled the watch. He posted Colt at the gap that night. It was supposed to make a man of him."
"And Colt left."
"There was a girl in town. He thought nothing would happen on one night."
"How do you know?"
"Because I found him. After." His jaw moved. "He came up the trail at midnight with lipstick on his collar, and his father was already dead."
I put my hand over my mouth.
"I was at the lodge," Gunnar said. "I heard the howl from the gap. I was there in twelve minutes. It wasn't fast enough."
"Twelve minutes."
"My brother was still alive when I got there. Long enough to ask me."
