Chapter 32: Pack Night
I lasted until Friday night.
"Just a corner," I said. "One corner of the tarp."
"No."
"I'm the Luna. I'm ordering you."
"You're the Luna of the pack," Gunnar said. "Not the shed."
On Saturday morning he walked me out there with his hands over my eyes.
All eight kids followed us in their pajamas, shoving.
He took his hands away.
The tarp was gone.
Where the forge had stood, there was an oven.
A big brick bake oven with an arched mouth and a curved iron door.
The chimney went up through the roof where the forge stack used to be.
The door handle was forged into a curl.
There was a long plank table beside it, sanded smooth, with twelve iron hooks for aprons.
Over the shed door, on the inside, hung an iron sign.
PREWITT'S.
"Your mother's rolls," Gunnar said. "Four dozen at a time. Eight, if you want. The store will take all of them, and Fern says the diner in town will too."
I couldn't say anything.
"The forge is in the barn now," he said. "It's fine. It smokes a little."
